hybrids have been reported ( Burbank, 1914 ; Felipe, 2009 ; Shoferistov, 1988 ). Some hybrids have been widely used in fruit production either as scion cultivars or rootstocks. A hybrid rootstock for peach was derived from a cross of P. tomentosa and

Abstract
Pieris floribunda Pursh (Benth. & Hook.) and P. japonica (Thunb.) D. Don are popular ornamentals in the U.S. where they have been grown commercially for over 100 years. Interest in these species has increased in the past decade and several new cultivars have been released. Most of these have been selections within P. japonica or its close allies: P. taiwanensis Hayata, P. formosa (Wall.) D. Don, and P. forrestii Harrow. Unfortunately, most of these cultivars lack cold hardiness (USDA zone 5 and below) and they are susceptible to lacebug, Stepanitus takeyai Drake and Maa (syn. S. globulifera). Winter hardiness and lacebug resistance are characteristic of P. floribunda, but this species, in contrast with the others, is almost impossible to root from cuttings. An interspecific hybrid of P. floribunda and P. japonica could lead to a recombinant having the best ornamental features of both parents, but controlled pollinations between these species have been unsuccessful. Several recent attempts by the author resulted in no seed production or seed that failed to produce viable offspring.
