The antioxidation capacities of green `Welcome', green and white `Gijnlim', and purple `Purple passion' asparagus spears were evaluated. Analyses of rutin and total polyphenols, and assays of DPPH radical absorbing and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) antioxidation were conducted. Varietal differences associated with the colors of spears were observed both in the amounts of rutin, total polyphenols and in DPPH radical absorbing activities, although not in LDL antioxidation activities. DPPH radical absorbing activities seemed to be affected by both rutin and other polyphenolic compounds. However, LDL antioxidation activities were likely to be influenced more by other polyphenolic compounds than by rutin. Total polyphenol content showed a fairly close relationship with rutin content, DPPH radical absorbing activity and LDL antioxidation activity. To determinate total polyphenol content using the Folin–Denis' method seemed to be useful for selecting the breeding lines that show high antioxidative capacities.

Twenty-day-old `Bush Blue Lake 47' common bean plants grown in a growth chamber at 25 days/22C night and a 12-hour photoperiod regime were foliar sprayed with 0.5% GLK-8903 including 0.05% Tween-20. After 24 hours of treatment, plants were chilled in a cold room (4C day/night, 12 hours of light). After 3 days of chilling, leaves of untreated controls were injured, as visually characterized by leaf wilting, whereas leaves of the GLK-8903-treated plants still retained turgor. During chilling, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) decreased. GLK-8903 treatment had no effect on SOD and POD activities; however, the CAT activity was reduced significantly after GLK-8903 treatment either at 25 or at 4C. During chilling, the content of malondialdehyde, a decomposition product of phospholipid peroxidation, increased in treated plants and untreated controls, with increased content significantly lower in the former compared with the latter. The GLK-8903 per se and total lipid extracted from GLK-8903-treated plants were able to reduce the linoleic acid oxidation in vitro. The mechanism by which GLK-8903 alleviates chilling injury in bean plants is discussed.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a widely used turfgrass. In this study, the effect of exogenously applied 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) on salt stress tolerance of perennial ryegrass was investigated. The results indicated that pretreatment with four concentrations of EBR (0, 0.1, 10, 1000 nM) improved salt tolerance of perennial ryegrass. Exogenous EBR treatment decreased electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA), and H2O2 contents and enhanced the leaf relative water content (RWC), proline, soluble sugar, and soluble protein content under salt stress condition. Meanwhile, EBR reduced the accumulation of Na+ and increased K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ contents in leaves after salt treatment. Moreover, EBR pretreatment also increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity, as well as ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione contents. These results suggested that EBR improved salt tolerance by enhancing osmotic adjustment and antioxidant defense systems in perennial ryegrass.

`Pingyitiancha' has good agricultural traits and is an important rootstock for apples. It was studied for Kam, Cef and Carb concentrations, precultural times, active medium of A.tum, Ca++ concentration, mixed inoculation times of AgNO3, and PVP delay selection times for getting transgenic `Pingyitiancha' stock with more resistance to drought and salt. It was demonstrated that the highest transformation frequency was obtained with 200 mg·L-1 Cef as an A.tum restraining antibiotic, 8 mg·L-1 Kam as a selection antibiotic, GCJ8 active medium, a precultural of 2 days, 5 Ca++ concentrations in preculture and coculture medium compared with standard MS medium, immersed in A. tum as OD600 for 0.5 to 1 min., 4 mg·L-1 AgNO3 and 0.7% PVP as an anti-oxidation compound to reduce hydroxybenzene oxidation and delay selection for 5 days by using `Pingyitiancha' apex shoots as explants. Using mediate of A. tum strain LBA4404 under conditions mentioned above and same explants, the HVA1 gene were transformed into `Pingyitiancha' under the control of CaMV35S promoter and obtained Kam resistance regeneration plants. Six transgenic plants were confirmed by PCR and subsequent dot blot methods.
