Potted plants of `Taiyoh' and `Hanakisoi' tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.) were treated with a foliar spray of uniconazole or paclobutrazol for shoot length control. Uniconazole sprays at 25 or 50 ppm upon sprouting effectively reduced shoot length in both cultivars. The retarding effect was greater in `Taiyoh' than in `Hanakisoi' at 25 ppm. Uniconazole treatment did not influence flower diameter or days to flowering in either cultivar. Paclobutrazol sprays at 500 and 1000 ppm were less effective in reducing `Hanakisoi' shoot length than uniconazole sprays at 25 and 50 ppm. Chemical names used: E-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-(l,2,4-triazol-l-yl)-l-pentan-3-ol (uniconazole); (1RS, 3RS)-1-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-(1,2,4-triazol-l-yl)-l-pentan-3-ol (paclobutrazol).

There exist large accumulations of natural genetic diversifications under the natural and artificial selections on the flower among the Chinese tree peony cultivars incited by ornamental and medicinal uses in the past over 1500 years in China. Paeonia suffruticosa `Xiao Ci Wei' is a unique Chinese tree peony cultivar possessing special bicolored petals with tubular tip structure (Paeoniaceae). This natural mutant is not only a unique ornamental, but also a valuable material for scientific researches in Evodevotics.

Abstract

Sulfur-containing compounds, H2S, SO2, allyl sulfide, and allyl isothiocyanate broke dormancy in gladiolus (Gladiolus x Tubergenii Hort., Gladiolus spp.), Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC., or tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.). A 1% H2S treatment for 1-8 hr was most effective with the least phytotoxicity. Garlic paste/vapor, which included allyl sulfide, also was effective. H2S, allyl sulfide and garlic vapor increased the respiration rate of tubers in Platycodon grandiflorum within 15 hr after treatment.

Abstract

Volatiles from garlic and horseradish paste broke corm dormancy of springflowering gladiolus (Gladiolus × Tubergenii Hort. Effective substances in garlic were allyl sulfide, methyl disulfide, n-propyl disulfide, and those in horseradish were allyl sulfide, allyl isothiocyanate, and n-propyl sulfide. Monosulfide extracted from garlic paste, allyl sulfide, and allyl disulfide were effective in breaking corm dormancy of summer-flowering gladiolus (Gladiolus spp.). Methyl disulfide promoted sprouting and flowering of tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa Andr.) and flowering of ornamental cherry (Prunus spp.) without phytotoxic symptoms.
