`Clé des Champs' is a new June-bearing strawberry cultivar (Fragaria ×ananassa Duch.) bred for Eastern Central Canada and climates similar to Quebec conditions. `Clé des Champs' was released for pick-your-own and shipping because it has very attractive light red, glossy (Fig. 1), and firm fruit, which have an excellent shelf life compared with `Kent'.

Abstract

A haploid (2n = 28) derived from Fragaria × ananassa Duch. cv. Tioga (2n = 56) was obtained after pollination with Potentilla anserina L. The sublethality of the true hybrids is an excellent screen for exposing the polyhaploids that might be difficult to detect in normal octoploid populations.

Abstract

Optimum leaf number at transplanting, as related to fruit yield for strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) plants which had received no chilling in the nursery, varied with cultivar. Leaf number optimum for ‘Dover’, ‘Florida Belle’, breeding line 77-163, and ‘Pajaro’ were 4, 4, 3, and greater than 5, respectively.

Abstract

Strawberry plants were regenerated by anther culture from 4 different octoploid cultivars of Fragaria × ananassa. All plants possessed the octoploid chromosome number. Evidence is given that the plants may have originated from gametic tissue. Four different nutrient media were tested and Gresshoff and Doy Number 1 medium gave best results.

Abstract

The ‘Cardinal’ strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) has been released by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station to fill the need for a large-fruited, productive cultivar adapted to Arkansas conditions. Its fruit characteristics make it a dual-purpose cultivar, suited to both fresh market and processing use. In preliminary trials it appears promising for use in once-over mechanical harvesting.

Abstract

A range of 3°C was observed in flower frost tolerance in 21 cultivars of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa. Duch.). Fruits were more susceptible to damage than flowers or buds. ‘Gala’ and ‘Robinson’ were among the least tolerant cultivars while ‘Earlidawn’ and ‘Catskill’ were the most tolerant to flower injury. Origin of cultivar had no relationship to flower frost tolerance.

(2-Chloroethyl) phosphonic acid (ethephon) applied to greenhouse-grown ‘Ozark Beauty’ (everbearer), ‘Tristar’, ‘Hecker’, and ‘Brighton’ (day-neutrals) strawberry plants (Fragaria X ananassa Duch.) when primary flower opened, increased leaf number and decreased petiole length. Both 500 and 1000 ppm ethephon increased the number and percentage of withered inflorescences (≥ 75% shriveled) and thus eliminated strawberry blossoms. All cultivars responded similarly to treatments.

Abstract

The ‘ArKing’ strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch) has been released by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station to provide a late-ripening, red stele root-rot-re-sistant cultivar adapted to Arkansas conditions. ‘ArKing’ is similar in size and productivity to the popular ‘Cardinal’, but has greater disease resistance and later maturity.
