Abstract

Pelargonium hortorum (Bailey) ‘Sprinter Scarlet’ and Petunia hybrida (Bailey) ‘Candy Apple’ seedlings were grown in 2 media and watered with 5 nutrient solutions containing varying ratios of NO3 :NH4 +, each resulting in a total NO3 plus NH4 + concentration of 15 meq liter−1. There were no significant differences in height, fresh and dry weights, or number of vegetative breaks in soil-grown plants due to the N forms. Plant growth in the soilless medium was substantially reduced as the proportion of NH4 + increased above 50%.

Abstract

Dianthus caryophyllus L. cvs. DWF White #1, Scania and Crowley's Pink Sim were grown in greenhouses covered with new corrugated fiberglass reinforced plastic panels (New FRP), single layer UV-resistant polyethylene (Sgl Poly), air inflated double layer polyethylene (Dbl Poly), and 8-year-old weathered corrugated fiberglass reinforced plastic panels (Old FRP). Total flower production in the New FRP, Dbl Poly and Old FRP cover treatments was 1.9, 21.8 and 56.5% less, respectively, than in the Sgl Poly treatment. Significant interactions were noted between cultivar fresh weights, stem lengths, grades and cover treatment. Increase of irradiance in the cover treatments reduced return crop times while increasing stem length, fresh weight and grade.

Abstract

The overall flower production of Gerbera jamesonii (Bolus), cvs. Amethyst, Friendship, and Mandrin, was 90% greater in root zone-heated media compared to nonheated substrates. Root zone heating also attributed to an overall 15% increase in stem length, but only a 4% nonsignificant decrease in flower diameter. The greatest flower yield, longest stems, and largest-diameter flowers were produced by plants grown in the pea gravel substrate.

This study was carried out to determine the influences of planting date (June, July) and soil applications of Trichoderma harzianum (strain T-95) and a fungicide containing ethazole + thiophanate (BanrotR) on flower production of standard carnation cvs. Improved White and Tanga. The one-year production data showed that the fungicide treatment increased flower yield by 7.3% (33.5 flowers/m2) and 4.8% (23.3 flowers/m2) in Improved White and Tanga, respectively, for June planting. Improved White produced more flowers and fancy grades when planted in July as compared to June planting. Planting date did not influence either the yield or the flower quality in Tanga. The effectiveness of Trichoderma as a biological control agent on flower yield and quality was not evident. The patterns of weekly flower production for the two cultivars were determined and graphically illustrated.
