Abstract
The University of California and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the release to commercial lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seed growers of breeder seed for California production districts of 9 new crisphead lettuce cultivars: ‘Calrey’, ‘Calrico’, ‘Alamo’, ‘Anza’, ‘Laguna’, ‘Ramona’, ‘Rita’, ‘Vega’, and ‘Vista’. The first 2 were released on March 9, 1976, the latter 7 were released on October 15, 1980.
Abstract
A mosaic disease of Lactuca sativa L. is described and the causal agent identified as a new virulent isolate of lettuce mosaic virus (LMV). The reservoir of infection was bristly oxtongue, Picris echioides L. Lactuca sativa L. cvs. Gallega, Calmar, Imperial 410, and Bibb systemically infected with virulent LMV did not transmit the virus through the seed. A survey of L. sativa cultivars indicated that the non-lethal reaction to the virulent isolate was restricted in the crisphead type to cultivars that are turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) susceptible, and downy mildew-resistant. A similar relationship was found in L. serriola lines. The non-lethal reaction was conferred by dominant complementary genes. ‘Gallega’, reported to be resistant to common LMV, was found to be susceptible to systemic infection by the virulent LMV isolate.
Abstract
‘Royal Red Cherry’ and ‘Short Red Cherry’ are indeterminate, fruitful and multiple disease resistant tomato cultivars. ‘Royal Red Cherry’ is similar to ‘Large Red Cherry’ and ‘Jumbo Cherry’ in fruit size and quality, but is a more prolific yielder. ‘Short Red Cherry’ has a more compact vine type that is based on the brachytic (br) gene and it is most desirable for the patio, container gardener. ‘Short Red Cherry’ is generally earlier in production pattern than ‘Royal Red Cherry’.
