Abstract
I am not a plant breeder, but for 30 years I have been associated with a department where the area of plant breeding and genetics has received major emphasis, and I have come to believe that this area holds more promise than any other in improving agricultural production nationally and worldwide. Recent and continuing changes in the plant breeding and genetics area are creating a unique opportunity for departments of horticulture that can provide a complete program in plant breeding and genetics, from genetic engineering to the final release of a cultivar. Although many future graduates may be associated with only a small part of total cultivar development, all would gain perspective from association with faculty that represent all segments of the scientific program.
Abstract
The role of horticulture in meeting world food requirements is a positive one; horticultural crops do have a unique place in meeting world nutritional needs. I feel fortunate in this assignment of topics because I think that the most important role of fruits and vegetables is in providing vitamins A and C in our diets.
