Abstract
Dendrobium orchids have become an important florist crop in Hawaii. The long, gracefully arching sprays (racemes) with numerous attractive individual flowers have a variety of uses. The sprays can be utilized in bud vases or combined effectively with other flowers in arrangements, while indvidual flowers can be used in corsages, wedding bouquets, and leis. The sprays are long lasting and are easy to pack and ship to distant markets.
Abstract
The last American Society for Horticultural Science symposium on ethylene was held 13 years ago. Much progress has been made since then, particularly in the biochemistry and physiology of ethylene synthesis and the technology for control of ethylene reactions. It is this recent progress that precipitated this symposium. The 5 symposium papers will describe the details of this recent progress. I will attempt here to set a historical perspective for this symposium.

In a 9-year study of ‘Mcintosh’, 85 observations were made of the optimum harvest date for apples destined for storage. Statistical analyses showed that 75% of the variation in the length of the period from bloom to harvest was associated with seasonal differences in dates of bloom and average mean daily temperatures during the period from bloom + 30 days.
