Abstract

‘Brandywine’ (tested as NY 905) is a purple raspberry released by the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, Geneva, NY. It is recommended for home gardens and for commercial trial because of its superior vigor, productivity, large fruit size and good processing qualities compared to the cultivars now grown (1).

Abstract

A range of 3°C was observed in flower frost tolerance in 21 cultivars of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa. Duch.). Fruits were more susceptible to damage than flowers or buds. ‘Gala’ and ‘Robinson’ were among the least tolerant cultivars while ‘Earlidawn’ and ‘Catskill’ were the most tolerant to flower injury. Origin of cultivar had no relationship to flower frost tolerance.

Abstract

‘Royalty’ is a new purple raspberry cultivar with the high fruit quality of the red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) and the vigor and large fruit size associated with the purple raspberry (R. idaeus × R. occidentalis L). The cultivar is hardy and has wide adaptation and good yield potential. It has immunity to Amphorophora agathonica Hottes, the aphid vector of the raspberry mosaic virus complex, and resistance to Aphis rubicola Oestland, the aphid vector of raspberry leaf curl. It also shows resistance to Byturus rubi Barber, the raspberry fruit worm.
