Abstract
Succinic acid-2,2-dimethylhydrazide (SADH) was applied to mechanically topped ‘Delicious’, ‘Rome Beauty’, and ‘Stayman Winesap’ apple trees when top shoot growth was 10-15 cm long. SADH at 2000 ppm applied to the entire tree at 3700 liters/ha or applied across the top at 900-1400 liters/ha controlled fruit drop and upper shoot growth, reduced fruit size, and increased firmness. The control in shoot growth by SADH was not sufficient to be considered commercially acceptable.
Abstract
Altering the elemental content of ‘Goldspur’/M.26 apple tree leaves and fruits affected fruit russet but did not reduce it to acceptable levels. Multiple regression analyses indicated that fruit size and elemental content variables accounted for 57.5% of the russeting variance. Fruit size had a greater negative correlation with fruit russeting than any element. Fruits collected from ‘Goldspur’/MM.106 apple trees growing beneath plastic canopies, and treated with different fungicides had a higher finish than those from trees outside the canopies. Dodine-treated fruits were more russeted than fruits receiving metiram or no fungicides.
Abstract
A bell shaped, rest-intensity curve as a function of time was obtained for ‘Elberta’ peach and ‘Chinese’ apricot leaf buds growing in the field. Rest was not closely associated with fluctuating environmental temperatures, cold hardiness, or rate of respiration.
Apricot leaf buds reached the peak of their rest before peach leaf buds, and it was not as intense or as deep as it was with the peach buds. Rest was completed by both species at the same time in early January.
Abstract
Tree trunks painted on the sunlit side with white exterior latex paint were found to be 30 C cooler than nonpainted trunks during midwinter in midlatitudes. The dependency of the cambium temp amelioration on wind speed and trunk diam is indicated through an argument based on convective transfer theory. The argument suggests that for trunks larger than 10 cm diam or for wind speeds less than 30 cm/sec around the trunk or both, the amelioration due to white paint may be greater than 30 C.
