Under certain conditions, fall and spring applications of Succinic acid 2,2-dimethylhydrazide (Alar) at 5,000 ppm delayed inflorescence development of land cress plants 12 to 14 days following cold induction of winter. Alar-treated plants were greener, shorter and more compact; pods were smaller in length and diameter. Seeds of Alar-treated plants were delayed in maturity, smaller, and had a much lower per cent of germination. Chemical analysis showed that immature, Alar-treated greenhouse plants were higher in protein and lower in nitrates than untreated plants. Under a favorable, cool, field environment, plants of all treatments were higher in protein and Alar caused no increase.
